The Government of India has agreed to build a bridge on the Mahakali River on the Nepal-India border connecting Darchula of Nepal with Dharchula of India. The decision was taken by the Indian cabinet meeting on Thursday, External Affairs Minister Dr. S Jaishankar said in a tweet.

"This is an important step, it will deepen our friendly relations," Jaishankar tweeted.
The Government of Nepal had been urging India to reach a consensus on the construction of a bridge over the Mahakali River at Darchula.
The Indian cabinet on Thursday approved the signing of an agreement to build a bridge between the two countries. Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting Anurag Thakur said that the agreement would be signed soon.
According to him, the construction of the bridge will be completed in the next three years. ‘The bridge will benefit the people of Uttarakhand, India and Nepal. Trade and brotherhood between the two countries will be further strengthened, 'he said.

Earlier, Nepal's Foreign Minister Dr. Narayan Khadka and his Indian counterpart Dr. S. Jayashankar had a discussion on mutual cooperation and relations between the two countries.
According to Nepal's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the two sides discussed various areas of bilateral cooperation during a telephone conversation on Thursday. They also talked about the development partnership and cooperation between Nepal and India in the Covid-19 pandemic.
According to the ministry, they also discussed ways to broaden the scope of cooperation between the two countries. Foreign Minister Dr Khadka and Indian External Affairs Minister Jaishankar also exchanged New Year greetings.
