Lt Col Chandan Singh of the Indian contingent (INDBATT) is UNIFIL’s only veterinarian and his services are highly sought after.
Shepherds and farmers in UNIFIL’s area of operations depend on the regular visits by INDBATT’s veterinary service to treat and vaccinate their animals.
The recurring Vet Assistance Camp was organized from 18 to 22 July in several villages in south Lebanon, offering a free vaccination service to shepherds and farmers who cannot afford the expensive veterinary care and medicines.
Traveling through the often-difficult terrain of UNIFIL’s area of operations Lt Col Singh and his team provide a door-to-door service and have established a close relationship with the local farmers and shepherds. In fact, INDBATT has offered their veterinary service since 2007 and their work and assistance is widely known and appreciated by the local population.
INDBATT conducts close to 200 Vet Camps per year covering all villages in its area of operations, providing free vet care to approximately 50,000 animals every year.
UNIFIL peacekeepers regularly conduct and implement various support activities with host communities in the south.
Building, maintaining, and nurturing good relationships with the local communities is an important aspect of implementing UN Security Council Resolution 1701.
