China turns deaf ears to allow Nepali MBBS students join back to colleges who had returned from there after COVID-19 surge

In mid-Februray 2020, a total of 175 Nepali students pursuing MBBS degree in Wuhan of China were returned owing to rising cases of COVID-19.

Wuhan was said by many as the epicenter of the COVID-19 and had send a sense of fear about the virus which led to a wide spread demand of the return of Nepali students in China to return the country. In the following months, more students across China returned back to Nepal.

After returning in the country they have been attending online classes for almost two years. However, studying MBBS demands more practical at the hospital at places they are studying. But, China has turned their deaf ears to the demands to go back in the college to complete their studies although these students have been for multiple times staging protest in the capital. Without completing required hours as an internship in the hospitals, the students won’t receive the MBBS degree.

It is said that above 225 such aspiring doctors are stranded in Nepal awaiting China’s approval to allow them enter them in the country. The Chinese side have not accepted the COVID 19 vaccination certificate to enter their country although most of the students have taken the China made Vero Cell.

These students once staged protest asking Nepali government to given a chance to complete their internship in hospitals here. But, the Nepal Medical Council, an apex government body for medical professionals in the country, slapped hefty monthly fee to complete their internship here in the country. Each students are required to submit Rs 15 to 22 lakhs for private hospitals to complete internship here in the country. Students have asked to either lower the fee or allow them to do internship in government colleges.

MBBS students studying the course here in Nepal are entitle to Rs 15,000 per month during the internship. But, for the unfortunate China returned students they will have to pay for the hospitals instead.

These students have been staging protesting for the past eight months asking to let them inside the country to complete their studies or allow them to complete the internship here in the country. But, their plea are still not been heard by both of the governments.

Meanwhile, the 2015 MBBS batch students in China are told by the Chinese Universities to issue them the completion of the degree in time if they could complete required internship in Nepal as well.
