All the parties in ruling coalition have finally agreed to table the Millennium Challenge Corporation after another major party in the government Communist Party Nepal (Maoist Centre) agreed on it.
This has ended one level of stalemate in Nepali politics followed by months long confusion and chaos amongst the parties.
A meeting of the government coalition partners held today in Prime Minister's official residence in Baluwatar decided to table the pact for now.
Talking to media persons after the meeting of the coalition, Minister for Communication and Information Technology and Government Spokesperson Gyanendra Bahadur Karki said that the MCC agreement would be tabled in today's HoR meeting. He said that in-depth discussions will be held in the meeting itself to reach the conclusion.
Nepali Congress has been for a long time advocating about tabling and ratifying the deal through the HoR. However, its partners CPN- Maoist Centre, Janata Samajwadi Party, CPN- Unified Socialist and Rastriya Janamorcha Party stand opposed to the same.
Now, these parties have allowed to table the MCC however with a reservation that the lawmakers of their parties will not cast vote in support of it.
With this, the continuity of the coalition has been guaranteed, at least for now, as NC President and Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba was willing to forgo the current partnership and forge a new coalition with main opposition party CPN-UML, if need be, to ratify the MCC deal.
With this development, security measures have been beefed in the capital, especially around the Federal Parliament building as the proposal will likely be tabled at a meeting of the House of Representatives. The House meeting has been summoned for 1 pm, today.
Meanwhile, main opposition CPN-UML which have been obstructing the meeting of the house has yet reiterated its old stance. Although, the obstruction of house does not hinder the tabling of the MCC if such obstruction continues for long this house may not get time to ratify it in time as the time limit of this house will come to an end before a year as there is an election coming near.
