FNJ draws attention of PM Deuba over media laws

The Federation of Nepalese Journalists met Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba and drew his attention to the fact that even though the five-year term of the House of Representatives is coming to an end, various laws related to communication have not been finalized.

The officials of the Federation met him today at the Prime Minister's residence, Baluwatar, and asked him to take initiatives to finalize various laws related to communication, including the Media Council Bill, in the current session itself.

The Federation also stressed during the meeting that the communication-related laws currently under consideration in draft form should be press and freedom of expression friendly.

The federation has expressed its concern that since there is no communication law at present, various laws including the Electronic Transactions Act have been invoked to make journalists suffer.

On that occasion, Prime Minister Deuba instructed the Minister of Communication and Information Technology Gyanendra Bahadur Karki by telephone to take initiatives to resolve the demands raised and put forward by the federation positively.

The meeting was attended by Chairperson Bipul Pokhrel, Senior Vice Chairperson Ramesh Bista, and General Secretary Roshan Puri.
