Murder accused Nepali arrested in Bahrain on the second day of Interpol Red Notice

A murder accused Nepali national who had been at large for the past 15 years after accused killing of a fellow gang memeber has been arrested at Baharain with the help of International Criminal Police Organization (INTERPOL) and Nepal Police.

 

In what seems to be a rare situation, Ashok Gurung of Pokhara was arrested in Bahrain two days after a red notice was issued on December 12 through the INTERPOL’S Kathmandu office at National Central Bureau. He is accused of killing Rojan Rai during a scuffle at Satmuhane in Pokhara in the second week of May 2006.

 

Normally INTERPOL arresting accused is a rare case in Nepal as most of the time INTERPOL only identifies the accused and provides information back to the home country.

 

But this time, the INTERPOL has taken a prompt action, thanks to the recent diplomatic channel developed by the Nepal police.

 

Nepal Police Spokesperson Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Bashant Bahadur Kunwar said that it is a results of the bilateral discussions held by Inspector General Shailesh Thapa Chhetri, who participated in the Interpol Division a few months ago. His visit has become useful to find the fugitive accused of committing a crime in Nepal are beginning to bear its fruit recently. Kunwar further said that efforts were being made to bring other accused and convicts who had been hiding around the world and against whom the red notices were issued.

 

Currently there are around 38 outlaws hiding outside the country and against whom the red notice has been issued through INTERPOL.

 

Gurung’s arrest is also made possible with the initiation of Superintendent of Police (SP) Ramesh Thapa who had intensified the search for those involved in the heinous crime after assuming command of the District Police Office, Kaski.00

 

SP Thapa told pardafas that the search for Ashok Gurung, who was absconding while digging old files, has started. He said that his confession about the murder has already been recorded.

 

Meanwhile, SSP Kunwar said that Gurung, who was arrested by the Bahraini police on December 13, is in a process of being returned to Nepal within 30 days.
