The Nepali Army (NA) has saved the lives of 17 pregnant women in three years. Although there is a maternity service with a surgery facility at Baitadi District Hospital, there is no Blood Transfusion Centre (Blood Bank) and blood is not available when needed.
However, the NA personnel are playing the role of life protectors by donating blood when it is needed to save delivering women, with the Hanumandwoj Company of the army playing a crucial role.
On Tuesday, a 21-year-old pregnant woman from Dasharathchand Municipality-4, of Jarg village was bleeding copiously after surgery and blood were not available at the hospital. But with the help of Lokendra Karki, a NA soldier, her life was saved. Lokendra, who donated the blood, said that he felt proud to see the mothers and children who survived through his blood.
Govind Thapa, major and chief of the Company, informed that in the last three years, Hanumandwoj Gulma of the NA stationed in Baitadi has saved the lives of 17 pregnant women by donating blood.
He said, "Despite the slogan of donating blood, donating life, there is no blood bank in Baitadi. When there is an emergency, pregnant women, their relatives, and the hospital appeal to the army for blood.”.
Remembering the responsibility of serving the country and the people, the NA personnel are always ready to donate blood, Thapa added.
Earlier on August 26, according to Major Thapa, the life of a patient was saved by the blood donated by Lokendra Mahata, a constable of the Nepali Army, to a patient whose life was in danger due to blood deficiency.
Harish Pant, Information Officer of District Hospital, Baitadi, said, “Since there is no blood transfusion center in the district, we have to rely on the army and police to save the pregnant women and patients needing blood.”
