Nepal-led NCP (US) okays to table MCC at parliament

The ruling Communist Party Nepal (Unified Socialist) has decided to table the Millennium Challenge Corporation deal in the House of Representatives.

The party's standing committee meeting held today decided on the matter breaking its long-time stance to not allow MCC enter the parliament. The party has said that the decision was made to end the status quo seen currently in Nepali political scenario.

However, it has also said that the decision was made to allow discussion about MCC in the parliament. It has also reiterated its old stance saying that MCC could not be passed from the parliament without necessary amendments in it.

CPN – US’s decision today is followed by a fear that Prime Minister and Nepali Congress’s Chair Sher Bahadur Deuba will form a new government with support from the main opposition NCP UML just to table the MCC at the lower house.

The CPN (US) has taken the middle ground to save the alliance after the ruling coalition clashed over the MCC. Earlier, the CPN Maoist led by Pushpa Kamal Dahal and the CPN (US) had jointly stated that they would not allow the table to be tabled in the parliament. After that, PM Deuba was active in dialogue with the main opposition party, the CPN-UML, to move the MCC forward anyway.

The decision to allow the MCC to be tabled was taken by the CPN (S) following the risk of a possible alternative alliance between the UML and the Congress.
