A Nepali peacekeeper who was shot and wounded by a rebel in Congo has died while undergoing treatment.
According to the Military Public Relations and Information Directorate, Anil Gurung, a resident of Gurmakot-14 in Surkhet, died.
He died at the Label-2 Hospital in Buniya. The injured were rescued by helicopter and taken to hospital.
During the operation conducted under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Nikhil Kunwar, he was attacked. During the search operation, the rebels fired suddenly.
According to the spokesperson of the Nepal Army, Brigadier General Narayan Silwal, the Nepal Army had reached the place after liberating the land previously occupied by the rebels. Meanwhile, a person was injured in a firing incident from an unknown place.
He was serving in the first batch of peacekeepers deployed in the Congo to establish peace at the call of the United Nations.
Chief of Army Staff Prabhuram Sharma on behalf of the entire Nepal Army family expressed his deep respect for the peacekeepers who died in the line of duty.
The statement said, "The Nepal Army extends its heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families at this sad time which has shocked the entire Nepal Army."
