Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba has backtracked from his long commitment from tabling the Millennium Challenge Corporation-Nepal Compact in Parliament.
It is said that Deuba withdrew its long term stance to table MCC today, after Pushpa Kamal Dahal (prachanda) chair of Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist Centre) threatened to quit the government if it is tabled without amendments.
Earlier today Dahal and CPN (Unified Socialist) chair Madhav Kumar Nepal had agreed not to allow MCC being tabled in the House. After which, Deuba was forced to make an agreement with Dahal about withdrawing from the MCC pact.
This has pushed PM Deuba to a more difficult situation as he had had publicly said the MCC would be tabled and would be passed with support from parties in the coalition government. He had also held a meeting with house Speaker Agni Sapkota for the tabling of the $500 million US grant agreement at the House meeting today.
The ruling coalition is said to reach their final decision about MCC ratification tomorrow. A new meeting between senior leaders of the parties in coalition about the MCC has already begun at the PM's official residence at Baluwatar.
Meanwhile the House of Representative meeting was deferred today until Friday, after CPN (UML) obstructed the meeting as soon as it was started.
