UK to help police with equipment and infrastructure, Ambassador's interest in transitional justice

The Government of the United Kingdom of Great Britain is going to help Nepal Police in capacity development under its Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO).

The UK government has approved the second phase of the Integrated Program for Strengthening Security and Justice (IPSSJ).

Britain has positively accepted the request of the Nepalese government to review the project to support the Nepal Police with more equipment and physical infrastructures.

Along with this, now with the help of the second phase of the project will continue.

With the support of the UK, the Integrated Program for Strengthening Security and Justice was successfully completed from 2014-2021.

On  Thursday, the British ambassador to Nepal Nicola Kathryn Pollitt made a courtesy meeting with Home Minister Balkrishna Khand. The meeting focused on how to advance the project.

According to the Secretariat of Khand, the issue of strengthening the mutual relations between the two countries was also discussed during the meeting.

In the meeting, Home Minister Khand thanked Ambassador Pollitt for helping to successfully complete the Integrated Program for Strengthening Security and Justice from 2014-2021 with the help of the UK.

In addition to continuing the project, the British Overseas Commonwealth and Development Office has already approved the second phase of the IPSSJ program in October 2021.

There was a discussion in the meeting in this context about signing an MoU to implement cooperation between Nepal and Britain.

Minister Khand said that in the first phase, the project played an important role in increasing people's access to security and justice, preventing gender-based violence, and strengthening police-community relations.

During the meeting, British Ambassador Pollitt also expressed interest in transitional justice in Nepal. Minister Khand said that the government is committed to the implementation of agreements made with various political groups and rebels to manage the political conflict. He said that the agreement with Netra Bikram Chand Biplav, Janmat Party, and Tharu Kalyankari Sabha is in the process of implementation.

Minister Khand informed Ambassador Polit that the government has reached an agreement with various political parties for the establishment of sustainable peace and strengthening of democracy and that agreement is in the process of implementation.

Minister Khand thanked the British Ambassador for the assistance provided by the international delegation and the foreign community to resolve the transitional situation in Nepal.
