Nearly two months after Boris Johnson reluctantly announced his resignation on the steps of 10 Downing Street, Britain has finally chosen a new leader: Liz Truss.
She's succeeded Boris Johnson as leader of the Conservative party, winning the most votes from members of that party.
Here are some key things to know about Liz Truss:
1. She's won a leadership contest, not a general election
2. She'll become the third female PM, All-female prime ministers in the UK so far have been Conservative.
3. She's described her parents as "left-wing"
4. She was originally a Liberal Democrat who used to speak in favor of abolishing the monarchy
5. She stood as a conservative candidate for Hemsworth, West Yorkshire, in the 2001 general election and lost. She faced another defeat in 2005 from Valley.
6. She gets "frustrated" at being "compared to Margaret Thatcher"
7. In 2006, she was elected as a councilor in South-East London's Greenwich after winning her first elections.
8. She's 47, married, and has two daughters
9. Earlier, She's worked for three former prime ministers i.e, David Cameron Theresa May, and Boris Johnson.
10. In 2016, Truss took a u-turn on her position on Brexit. She originally campaigned for the UK to remain in the European Union, but later switched her position and backed Brexit.
11. She was promoted by David Cameron to environment secretary and worked as justice secretary under Theresa May. She was eventually made foreign secretary by Boris Johnson in 2021.
12. She's pledged to "start cutting taxes from day one"
